The of counsel position at Stratagem Law Group is for an experienced Washington attorney who wants the platform of a firm without the structure of an associate role. In other words, bring a complementary practice, a portable book of business, or a specialty our clients need. Then join a firm that already runs like a larger one. Because our clients need counsel wherever business takes them, of counsel attorneys help us provide it.
The Of Counsel Position in Brief
Of counsel at Stratagem Law Group means a close, continuing relationship with the firm, not a name on the letterhead. We structure each affiliation around the attorney. For example, some of counsel bring their own clients and want shared systems, support, and a second set of hands on larger matters. Others bring a specialty that our business and healthcare clients ask for, such as employment, real estate, estate planning, tax, or intellectual property. Likewise, contract attorneys who prefer matter-by-matter work for the firm, with no origination expectations, are welcome to express interest here. Moreover, if you want to grow a team in your area over time, we are open to that conversation.
Every arrangement complies with the Washington Rules of Professional Conduct. That includes the rules on fee division, conflicts, and the use of the of counsel designation. In addition, each arrangement is documented in a written agreement before any work begins.
What the Relationship Looks Like
- Shared infrastructure: practice management, document systems, billing and trust accounting, research tools, and administrative support.
- Collaboration on matters where your practice and ours overlap, with clear responsibility for each client.
- Referrals in both directions. Any division of fees is handled in writing and in compliance with RPC 1.5.
- The freedom to keep your own clients and your own way of working. In return, we ask that you meet the firm’s standards for responsiveness and quality.
- Flexibility on location. Of counsel relationships are often remote-first. In-person work happens in Port Orchard, at client sites, or in court as matters require.
- Room to grow: as your practice here expands, we can also build a team around it together.
What the Of Counsel Position Requires
- Active membership in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association. Admission in the Western and Eastern Districts of Washington is also a plus.
- Substantial experience, usually five years or more, with a defined practice area or an established client base.
- A clean disciplinary record.
- Independence and judgment: the ability to run matters without supervision, as well as the humility to ask for a second opinion.
- A practice that complements ours, or a book of business you intend to keep growing. For instance, employment, real estate, estate planning, tax, intellectual property, insurance, or deeper healthcare work.
Compensation and Structure
Compensation for the of counsel position depends on experience, practice area, and portable business. Arrangements range from a percentage of collections on your own matters, to hourly or project rates for firm matters, to a hybrid of the two. Either way, we work it out with each attorney and put it in writing.
