The attorney position at Stratagem Law Group is for a lawyer who wants a real practice from the start. We want lawyers who are comfortable advising clients comprehensively, wherever business takes them. Our clients are business owners, executives, boards, healthcare providers, and nonprofits across Washington. Because their problems rarely stay in one practice area, neither does our counsel.
The Attorney Position in Brief
Business takes our clients in many directions. For example, a contract turns into a dispute, a dispute draws a regulator, and a growing company needs new governance. Consequently, the attorney position here is a generalist role by design. You will counsel, draft, and litigate, often for the same client in the same month. In addition, you will learn healthcare regulatory work from an attorney who spent sixteen years as a licensed nursing home administrator before he practiced law.
We hire attorneys at two points. Associates typically bring one to two years of practice and a business understanding. Lateral attorneys, on the other hand, bring an established practice, a book of business, or both. Either way, we build around your strengths.
Adjacent Practices and New Teams Are Welcome
You do not need to have practiced in our exact areas. In fact, some of the best fits come from adjacent fields. For instance, consider employment, insurance, real estate, tax, privacy, intellectual property, or estate and succession planning. Indeed, lawyers from those practices already know how rules shape business decisions, and how business decisions create legal risk.
We are also building for the future. If you could lead a practice our clients need and grow a team around it, tell us. In short, our goal is a firm that can say yes to more of what clients bring us.
Litigation, for Lawyers Who Want It
Our clients’ disputes go to court, and our attorneys go with them. Experienced litigators who want more than one practice area do well here. So do transactional, regulatory, and adjacent-practice lawyers who want to learn litigation and are eager to stand up in court. Moreover, we teach it the way lawyers learn it best: preparing real cases together, from first pleading through trial.
What You Will Do in the Attorney Position
- Advise closely held companies, executives, and boards on formation, governance, contracts, financing, and the everyday questions of running a business.
- Litigate business, employment, and civil rights disputes in Washington superior courts and, with federal admission, in the U.S. District Courts for the Western and Eastern Districts of Washington.
- Learn and practice healthcare regulatory law: licensure, surveys, Stark and Anti-Kickback questions, HIPAA, payer audits, and clawback defense.
- Counsel nonprofit boards and executive directors on governance, compliance, and disputes.
- Bring your own practice to the table, such as employment, real estate, tax, or intellectual property.
- Draft and argue motions, take and defend depositions, and prepare matters for trial and appeal.
- Work directly with clients from the first consultation, with the managing attorney’s supervision and the firm’s systems behind you.
What the Attorney Position Requires
- A Juris Doctor from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Active membership in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association, or admission pending with results expected within the year.
- At least one to two years of practice for associate candidates, in any practice area. Lateral candidates bring a longer record. We may consider exceptional recent graduates for the law clerk position.
- Litigation experience, assisting or leading, or the desire to learn it. We want attorneys who want to be in court.
- Comfort advising clients comprehensively: you see the whole problem, and you also know when to bring in help.
- Clear, disciplined writing, and the habit of checking your own work.
- A business understanding, whether from an MBA, prior business work, or a practice that served business clients.
We also give weight to admission, or eligibility for admission, in the Western and Eastern Districts of Washington. Experience in healthcare, employment, insurance, administrative, or nonprofit work counts too. So does comfort with modern legal technology, including AI-assisted research and drafting that you verify. For lateral candidates, we also weigh portable business, a complementary practice, and the ability to build a team.
Compensation, Location, and Growth
Compensation for the attorney position depends on experience, practice area, and portable business. We discuss it directly with each candidate rather than through a formula. The role is on site at our office in Port Orchard, on the Kitsap Peninsula. Our clients are across Washington and, for select federal cases, nationwide, so expect travel to courts and client sites.
Growth here is concrete. In a firm this size, an associate’s development is the managing attorney’s daily business, not an annual review. You will see how we price, staff, and win matters, and we will trust you with more as you earn it. For lateral attorneys, growth can also mean leading a practice group of your own.
