The law clerk position at Stratagem Law Group is for law students and recent graduates who want to do the work, not watch it. Clerks here research questions that end up in briefs, draft documents clients sign, and sit in on the strategy conversations that most firms keep behind closed doors.
The Law Clerk Position in Brief
We bring on law clerks and summer associates as the practice needs them: during the summer, during the academic year on a part-time schedule, and after graduation for candidates awaiting bar results. The work spans business law, litigation, healthcare regulatory matters, and nonprofit governance. That breadth is deliberate: we advise clients comprehensively, wherever business takes them, and clerks see how the pieces fit. Students licensed as legal interns under Washington’s Admission and Practice Rule 9 may, with supervision, take on the client contact and court appearances that the rule allows.
What You Will Do
- Research Washington and federal questions and write memoranda that answer them in plain terms.
- Draft contracts, corporate documents, pleadings, discovery, and motions for attorney review.
- Help prepare hearings, depositions, and trials: exhibits, witness outlines, and legal authorities.
- Attend client meetings and court proceedings with the managing attorney.
- Contribute to the firm’s Insights publications on healthcare, business, and nonprofit law.
- Learn the firm’s systems, including AI-assisted research and drafting tools, and how to verify what they produce.
What the Law Clerk Position Requires
- Current enrollment in a JD program at an ABA-accredited law school, or graduation within the last year with bar admission pending.
- Strong research and writing, demonstrated by a writing sample and transcript.
- Genuine interest in business, healthcare, or nonprofit law. Prior work experience in any field is a plus, and business or healthcare experience is a real advantage.
- A desire to learn litigation. Clerks here help prepare real hearings, depositions, and trials.
- Reliability, curiosity, and the willingness to ask when you do not know.
- Eligibility for legal intern licensure under Washington State Bar Association rules is helpful but not required.
Compensation and Schedule
Compensation for the law clerk position depends on experience, schedule, and the stage of your studies, and we discuss it directly with each candidate. Clerks work primarily on site at our office in Port Orchard, on the Kitsap Peninsula, and we set schedules around the academic calendar.
